Plastic wrap for pallets is commonly called stretch film, stretch wrap, or pallet wrap. It is made from LLDPE (linear low-density polyethylene) and engineered to stretch and cling tightly around a load to unitize and protect it during storage and shipping. Hand-applied versions are specifically called hand stretch film or hand wrap.

Cling wrap (like food wrap) is a thin, lightweight film designed for short-term food coverage. Pallet wrap — also called stretch film — is a heavy-duty LLDPE film engineered to stretch 100–300% and exert strong holding force around freight. Pallet wrap comes in gauges from 47 to 115 ga, is self-cling on contact, and is designed for load securing, not food use.

For most standard warehouse loads, 80-gauge cast hand film is the most common choice, balancing stretch performance and puncture resistance. Lighter loads can use 60–70 ga for cost savings, while sharp-cornered or heavy loads benefit from 90–115 ga or blown film. Pre-stretched hand film reduces physical effort for high-wrap-volume operations.

Cast stretch film unwinds quietly, offers consistent gauge, stretches more easily by hand, and provides excellent clarity for barcode scanning. Blown stretch film has higher puncture and tear resistance, making it better suited to heavy, sharp-cornered, or irregular loads. Cast is the everyday warehouse standard; blown is a premium option for demanding applications.

Hand stretch film is available in 12-inch (bundling and small loads), 15-inch, 18-inch (most popular for standard pallets), and 20-inch widths. The 18-inch width is the warehouse standard for pallet wrapping, while 12-inch bundling film is ideal for unitizing cases or securing irregular items without a full pallet wrap.
